A lovely innocent story
Referee saves the day as floodlight failure hits Mansfield Town reserves match at Rainworth MW
Andy Todd’s Mansfield Town’s reserve team ran out easy 3-0 winners of Rainworth MW at Kirklington Road last night in a friendly, which so nearly didn’t take place at all after a floodlight failure minutes before kick off.
As the teams we’re about to head out of the dressing rooms the floodlight in the right corner of the ground suffered an electrical fault and went out completely leaving on half of the pitch unlit.
Club officials attempted to resolve the issue, however it was the match referee who proved the eventual hero as he revealed his day job as an electrician and was only too happy to help fix the issue.
The crowd of less than a hundred were left sitting in complete darkness for at least 10 minutes as the referee and club officials working on the broken light needed to reboot the entire lighting system. The game eventually kicked off 45 minutes late.
Mansfield fielded a fairly strong side which included three trialists, two of them unnamed, and star names such as John Thompson, Louis Briscoe and Matt Green, the latter opening the scoring after 19 minutes, squirming in a long Andy Owens throw from close range after Louis Briscoe had made the flick on.
Young Stags keeper Ryan Hopkins denied Rainworth’s Ewan Clarke on the stroke of half-time with a fine block in a one v one situation.
The Stags then doubled their lead on the hour mark as trailist 2 belted in a free-kick from 25 yards.
Skipper Luke Jones completed the scoring with four minutes left to play as he hooked in substitute Ben Hutchinson’s corner at the far post.
STAGS: Ryan Hopkins, John Thompson, Luke Jones (C), George Pilkington, Trialist1, Michael Boateng (Scott Rogers 86), Anthony Howell, Trialist2, Louis Briscoe (Jake Green 81), Andy Owens (Jamie Tolley 72), Matt Green (Ben Hutchinson 66) Not Used: Jobe Shaw, Joel Holland

Trialist has played for so many clubs down the years. I am surprised he's still going!
