Relegated Sunderland have opened talks with Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes over becoming their next manager.
BBC Newcastle are reporting that the Championship club have moved to appoint the Scot as a replacement for David Moyes, who recently left the club.
Forty-five year old McInnes took over at Pittodrie back in 2013 and has led the club to second place in the Scottish top flight.
His contract at with the Dons has two years remaining and Aberdeen are reported to be seeking a payment of £1m to release him from the deal.
Sunderland were finally relegated from the Premier League last season after several campaigns of clinging on to their status.
